Some capabilities of Google Assistant that you may have never used are being phased out.

What you should know

The ability to set reminders based on a specific location is being removed from Google Assistant.

This could be linked to the upcoming release of "Memory," a new Assistant function that saves your information in a convenient location.

Soon, you won't be able to assign reminders to specific persons with the digital assistant.

People who routinely use Google Assistant to set reminders for them have some bad news from Google. Location-based reminders and the option to assign reminders to a specific individual are being removed from the voice assistant.

Google quietly announced the news in a little statement on the Google Assistant Help page that was easy to miss (opens in new tab). The option to "make reminders for a specific place" will be phased out soon, according to Google.

The corporation has not stated why this useful feature has been removed. Google did not react to Android Central's request for comment right away.

At 2018, location-based reminders were introduced as a means to keep track of what you want to do when you're in a given location. For example, you may ask Assistant to remind you to get a bottle of fresh milk at the grocery store on some of the top smart displays, such as the Nest Hub (2nd Gen).

The voice assistant will send you an alert to your phone once you've arrived at the nearest store.

You can still ask Assistant to create reminders at a specific time, even though this essential feature is being phased out. For receiving reminders, this is one of Assistant's most useful functions. You can also establish routines for when you arrive at a specified location, albeit this is a less convenient option than location-based reminders. Users who rely on Assistant to remind them of tasks they've been meaning to do when they arrive at a specific location will be disappointed by the feature's impending demise.

However, as indicated by comments in this Reddit thread(opens in new tab) regarding the feature's withdrawal, location-based reminders didn't seem to operate properly for all users all of the time. Some folks had no idea it existed until Google stated it was being phased out.

The ability to assign reminders to family members or anybody who joins in to the same Assistant-enabled device as you is another function that will be phased out soon. You will, however, be able to assign tasks through Google Chat or Gmail.

It's uncertain when these functions will stop working for everyone. The shift, according to 9to5Google(opens in new tab), is in preparation for the upcoming deployment of a new Assistant feature called "Memory," which was first noticed early last year and would allow you to remember on-screen material, reminders, and other things in a convenient area.

Google hasn't said when Memory will be available, but it's likely that some of Assistant's reminder capabilities will be removed to make room for the new feature.
